Dmitri Matheny is well-known for his melodic flugelhorn playing and intriguing compositional style. He is particularly at home on ballads where his lyrical, warm tone excels, sometimes inviting comparisons to Chet Baker. On this outing, Matheny is celebrating the release of his tenth album, Sagebrush Rebellion, with his current group, Keith Saunders on piano; Seward McCain on bass; and Leon Joyce on drums. A former protégé of the late flugelhorn legend Art Farmer, Matheny guides his fellow musicians through a thoughtful mix of his new compositions and jazz classics by Duke Ellington, Charlie Haden, Nat Adderley and Steve Swallow.
