In a career that has spanned over two decades and a dizzying array of musical ventures, saxophonist Mark Turner has become a leading figure in contemporary jazz. Turner grew up amongst a mélange of R&B, jazz, soul and gospel, each genre proving to be a touchstone for Turner’s soulful and buoyant tone. With eight albums as a leader to his credit, his latest is this year’s Lathe of Heaven, which brings together his varying influences. His quartet featuring trumpeter Avishai Cohen, bassist Joe Martin and drummer Justin Brown brings a unified sense of exploration and simpatico to the bandstand.
