True jazz pioneers still on the quest for new ground, Jimmy and Albert “Tootie” Heath have been part of the Stanford Jazz family for 15 years, as educators and performers. But they’ve been on the cutting edge of jazz for a lot longer than that! Collectively, they’ve played with so many of the great jazz artists that their late bass-playing brother, Percy, once told an interviewer, “If you want a chronology of who we played with, forget it! You don't have enough tape!” Indeed, a full discography of their recorded work would number above a thousand titles. A prolific composer and arranger, several of Jimmy’s compositions have become standards in the jazz repertoire, and Miles Davis once said of him, “Trane was always high on Jimmy’s playing and so was I.” All About Jazz says of Tootie, “[he] has long been a top hard bop-based drummer.” Joining the brothers will be bassist David Wong and pianist Jeb Patton....
